Dedication of "PRAYING HANDS" Quilt
November 22, 2009

Gift to Carmichael Presbyterian Church
Designed & Made by Margo Scandella

There are multiple reasons for the creation of this permanent hanging piece of Liturgical Art. It was created to become a focal point of the Parlor and compliment the Mission style architecture. Many groups meet in this room to contemplate God's faithful teachings and be in prayerful contemplation amongst faithful gatherings of Gods people.
Chris Beebe was the original Chair of the Liturgical Art Committee beginning in 2002 and served for 7 years — she has been the heartbeat and pulse of this group. Her friendship and inspiration greatly influenced Margo Scandella to become more involved with this group. This quilt is to honor Chris and her work with the Liturgical Art Committee, and is dedicated to the memory of her daughter, Maureen "Mo" Beeby. Lin Squire is the quilter.
QUILT DESIGN: The original pencil drawing of the praying hands dates back to 1508 by Albricht Duer from Germany.
The style of this quilt is called "Amish Shadow" — which is reflective of a more simple way of life where nothing is to be flashy. Only solid colors are used, no prints. The dark color, green, is the shadow, and the other lighter surrounding colors are soft and calming.
QUILT SYMBOLISM: The strength of prayer is represented by the Flames behind the hands to show the power of prayer. The descending Dove (with flames behind its tail) is showing Gods power in prayer. Vines show the growth we as Christians experience from prayer.
Who's hands are these....are these your hands, or Christ's hands?
